Balloon and Green Tour on the Same Day: Possible, but a Very Long Day

Yes, you can fit a sunrise hot air balloon flight and the Cappadocia Green Tour into one day between April and October, but it's a 13–16-hour day. In summer the balloon pickup is around 4:00 a.m., you're back at your hotel by about 7:15–7:45, and the Green Tour collects you at 9:00–10:00 and can return as late as 8:00 p.m. Most visitors pair the balloon with the shorter Red Tour instead.

Operators disagree about it. At least one Göreme balloon and tour agency says it doesn't normally recommend a balloon morning followed by the Green Tour, because of the long drive south, the canyon walk and the descent into Derinkuyu after a 4:30 wake-up. Other agencies schedule it or sell it as a package. What nobody disputes is that it's a long day: travelers who have done it report being tired and sleepy on the tour.

If this is your only free day in Cappadocia, it can be done, and the timings below show how. If you have two days, fly before the Red Tour on one and take the Green Tour on the other.

In April, May, August and September you're back from the balloon between about 7:30 and 8:20 a.m., which still works. In March and October it's nearer 8:50, which is tight if you're early on the tour's pickup list. From November to February sunrise is so late (up to about 7:57 a.m.) that the balloon runs into the tour pickup, so the combination doesn't work. A launch held on the ground while the aviation authority checks the wind can add up to an hour on any morning.

Lighter things to book after a balloon, and the Green Tour's sights on their own.

After a sunrise flight, the easier bookings are the Red Tour to Paşabağ, Zelve and Avanos, a sunset ATV ride through Love Valley, a horseback ride in Rose Valley or a Turkish night show. It's your only free day, you're traveling between April and October, you're fit and fine with stairs and tight spaces, and you can sleep on a minibus. Keep the evening completely free.

You have knee problems, young children or anyone who tires easily with you, you're claustrophobic, or you're traveling between November and February, when the timings don't work.

What If the Balloon Is Canceled and You've Booked the Green Tour?

The Green Tour still runs, and a grounded balloon is moved to the next available morning or refunded.

The balloon decision comes before dawn, usually by about 4:00–5:00 a.m. in summer, and GetYourGuide day tours allow free cancellation only up to 24 hours ahead. So a grounded balloon doesn't let you cancel that day's Green Tour for free; you do the tour and fly on another morning.
