Cappadocia Red Tour: Route, Stops, Price and Whether It's Worth It

It's a full-day guided tour of north and central Cappadocia, the area around Göreme. A typical route covers Uçhisar Castle, Paşabağ's fairy chimneys, the Zelve open-air museum, Devrent Valley, a pottery workshop in Avanos and a valley viewpoint, with hotel pickup. "Red" is an informal label local agencies use for the northern route; it isn't an official route, so stops vary by operator.

Hotel pickup and drop-off, a licensed guide and an air-conditioned minibus are included on every Red Tour we checked. Lunch and entrance tickets usually come only with a higher-priced option, and drinks are extra. Read the option you're booking: the lowest "from" price is almost always the version without lunch and tickets.

About 6.5 to 8 hours, depending on the operator. Pickup is usually between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m., and you're back at your hotel in the late afternoon, usually between 4:00 and 6:30 p.m. From spring to autumn that leaves room for a sunrise balloon flight first and a Turkish night in the evening.

The best-reviewed group Red Tour costs about $38 per adult without lunch or tickets, about $66 with lunch and about $81 with lunch and museum tickets (checked September 18, 2026). Small-group Red Tours start at about $28–$29 per adult, before lunch. Listings show a lower "from" price for single discounted departures.

Usually not. Every standard Red Tour we checked on GetYourGuide visits the Zelve open-air museum instead, which is quieter but has fewer frescoes. If the Göreme frescoes matter to you, book a tour that names the Göreme Open-Air Museum in its itinerary, such as the small-group Highlights tour, or visit on your own: it's about 1.5–2 km uphill from Göreme town.

No. Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı are on the Green Tour, which drives south of Göreme. A few hybrid tours add Özkonak underground city to a Red route; the Highlights tour on this page does, along with the Göreme Open-Air Museum. If an underground city is a priority, compare the Red Tour with the Green Tour before booking.

For a first visit with one sightseeing day, yes: it covers the fairy-chimney landscapes most people come for, with transport, tickets and a guide organized, for about $38 per adult. If you have a rental car and two or three days, you can see the same sights more slowly on your own.

Yes. The Red Tour's stops are all within about 20 minutes' drive of Göreme, so a rental car, scooter or taxis work well. Public transport is too limited to cover the route in one day. Visit Paşabağ and Zelve early, before the tour groups, and consider the €65 Museum Pass if you'll see several sites over three days.

Yes. It's the gentler of Cappadocia's two main day tours: you're driven between stops, with no long staircases or underground tunnels, though the paths at Zelve and Paşabağ are uneven and steep in places. Bring sun protection in summer, as there's little shade at Zelve and Paşabağ. The Green Tour, with about 400 steps into Ihlara Valley and steep underground stairs, is much harder.

Yes, and it's the most common way to do both. You're back at your hotel about two hours after sunrise, around 7:15–7:45 a.m. in June and 8:15–8:45 in spring and autumn, before Red Tour pickups at 9:00–10:00. Usually one: the pottery workshop in Avanos, with a wheel demonstration and a showroom. Some operators add a leather or carpet showroom. You're under no obligation to buy, similar pieces often cost less in town, and if you do buy by card, pay in Turkish lira rather than your home currency.

Book the Red Tour first if it's your first visit, you have one day, or you want an easier day on foot. Book the Green Tour if you want an underground city and a canyon walk, or have no car, since its sights are far harder to reach on your own. With two days, do both on separate days.
