Cappadocia Green Tour: Itinerary, Underground City, Ihlara Valley and Price

Cappadocia's south circuit: down into an underground city, along the Ihlara canyon floor and up into a cliff monastery, in one long guided day.

Length: about 9–11 hours door to door Walking: moderate, ~400 steps Adult price: about $38

What Is the Cappadocia Green Tour, and Is It Worth It?

The Cappadocia Green Tour is a full-day guided trip south of Göreme to Derinkuyu underground city, a 3–4 km walk through Ihlara Valley and the cliff-cut Selime Monastery. It's worth it, especially without a car: those sights are spread across southern Cappadocia and hard to link up on your own, and the tour covers the driving from about $38 per adult.

It's a different day from the Red Tour. Instead of Cappadocia's famous surface landscapes, you get three distinct experiences: underground, on a canyon floor and inside a monastery carved into a cliff. It's also longer, around 9 to 11 hours door to door with a lot of driving, and more physical: about 400 steps down into Ihlara, and steep, low passages underground.

Read the listing before booking. Some tours sold as "green" stop only at an Ihlara viewpoint or skip Selime, and the headline price usually leaves out lunch and entrance tickets. Deciding between the two big tours? Start with our Red Tour vs Green Tour comparison.

How a Green Tour Day Works: Underground Morning, Canyon Lunch, Monastery Afternoon

The order changes between operators, but most Green Tours run like this.

1. Pickup and a panorama, about 9:00–10:00 a.m.

Hotel pickup across the Göreme, Uçhisar, Ürgüp and Avanos area, often with a first stop at the Göreme Panorama or Pigeon Valley before the drive south.

2. Derinkuyu underground city

About 35 minutes south of Göreme. Your guide leads you down narrow stairways through stables, kitchens, storerooms and a chapel.

3. Ihlara Valley walk and riverside lunch

Down about 400 steps into the canyon, then roughly an hour on the flat path by the Melendiz River to Belisırma, where lunch is served beside the water.

4. Selime Monastery, then the drive back

A short climb into the cliff monastery at the head of the valley, often a shopping stop, and back at your hotel between about 5:30 and 8:00 p.m.

Other Experiences You Might Enjoy

What travelers add around a Green Tour day in south Cappadocia.

Most visitors pair the Green Tour with the Red Tour on another day for Paşabağ's fairy chimneys, Zelve and Avanos pottery. The other big bookings are a sunrise hot air balloon flight over Göreme, a sunset ATV ride through Love Valley and Rose Valley, a horseback ride in the Red and Rose valleys and a Turkish night show. If the Green Tour's long day is too much, a half-day Kaymaklı or Derinkuyu underground city tour covers its headline sight.

Cappadocia Green Tour Stops: Derinkuyu, Ihlara Valley and Selime

Three headline sights, each a different kind of experience, plus one or two viewpoints and a shopping stop.

White tuff ridges and green slopes near Pigeon Valley, a common first stop on the Cappadocia Green Tour
Many Green Tours start at Pigeon Valley or the Göreme Panorama before driving south. Tap to check Green Tour dates.

Derinkuyu Underground City

The deepest excavated underground city in Turkey, reaching about 85 meters (280 ft) down, with 8 of an estimated 18 levels open to visitors. It was large enough to shelter as many as 20,000 people with their livestock and food stores, and you'll pass stables, kitchens, food stores, ventilation shafts and a chapel. Passages are narrow, low and steep in places, and the air stays around 13–15°C (55–59°F) all year, so bring a layer.

Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı? Most Green Tours use Derinkuyu; a few use Kaymaklı, about 25 minutes from Göreme, which is wider, shallower and easier if tight spaces bother you. Derinkuyu is deeper and more dramatic. The listing names the one you'll visit.

Ihlara Valley walk

A canyon about 15 km long and up to 150 m deep, cut by the Melendiz River, with more than 100 rock-cut churches in its walls. Tours walk the stretch from the Tourist Gate to Belisırma, 3–4 km in about an hour to an hour and a half. The path is flat and easy; the effort is the staircase of roughly 400 steps down into the canyon at the start. Lunch is usually at Belisırma, at restaurants on platforms over the river.

Selime Monastery

The largest rock-cut religious complex in Cappadocia, carved into the cliff at the northern end of the Ihlara valley: chapels, a large kitchen and halls stacked up the rock face. Reaching the upper rooms is a short scramble, so wear shoes with grip.

Viewpoints and shopping stops

Most itineraries add the Göreme Panorama or Pigeon Valley, and a few add Nar crater lake. Nearly every group Green Tour includes a sales stop: an onyx or gemstone workshop, and sometimes a spice and dried-fruit shop. Buying is optional.

Is the Green Tour Hard? Stairs, Tunnels and a Long Day

The distance walked is modest. What makes it a harder day is the stairs, the tight underground passages and nine hours on the move.

The Ihlara staircase

About 400 steps down to the river at the Tourist Gate. The walk after it is flat. Serious knee problems make this the toughest part of the day.

Underground

Steep stairs and low passages where you'll stoop. If you're claustrophobic, look for a tour using Kaymaklı, or book the Red Tour, which has no underground city.

A long day on the road

Ihlara and Selime are about an hour and a half's drive from Göreme, so expect several stretches in the minibus and a return between about 5:30 and 8:00 p.m.

What to bring

Shoes with grip, a layer for the 13–15°C underground, sun protection and water for the canyon, and cash for lunch extras, tips and any shop purchase.

Which Green Tour Should You Book? Group, Small Group or No Shopping Stops

The standard group tour suits most people. A small group buys you a calmer pace; the Nar Lake tour trades a higher price for fewer sales stops.

What Travelers Say About the Green Tour

Verbatim reviews of the Guided Green Tour on GetYourGuide, including one that isn't five stars.

★★★★★

“This was a fantastic tour! Our guide, Cemil, was the perfect combination of informative, upbeat, humorous, and warm. The selection of sites was great - even if you've rented a car, as we had, I'd recommend this tour as a more efficient and meaningful way to visit sites that are farther from Göreme. For example, the underground city of Derinkuyu lacks signage, so Cemil's explanations really made the experience; he also helped shepherd us through the narrow passages, which can get congested with visitors. Ihlara Valley was beautiful and one of the highlights for me, but if you drive there yourself, you have to retrace your steps and hike back up to the starting point; the tour saves you the hassle. Overall, we had a wonderful time and highly recommend this tour to others!”

James, United States Guided Green Tour · August 2026
★★★★★

“Well organized tour with good timing throughout the day. There were many stops, but we still had enough time to visit each place and take photos without feeling too rushed. Our guide, Sefer, was informative and helpful during the explanations, and I especially appreciated that he moved the visit to the Derinkuyu underground city to the return trip, when it was much less crowded. The lunch was good and the overall organization worked smoothly. I really enjoyed the hike in Ihlara Valley and the underground city in particular. It’s a fairly long and busy day, but manageable for most people, and the guide always made sure nobody was left behind.”

Martina, Italy Guided Green Tour · May 2026
★★★★☆

“The tour went well. Mr. Cemil was knowledgeable and helpful. The points included in the tour were beautiful places, we especially liked the area around Ihlara. However, the tour was quite long, about 11 hours. Towards the end, most of us were tired, and we would have been happier if the last part in Uçhisar hadn't been included; I heard this from other guests as well. We would have been more pleased if the time allocated to shopping had been reduced and more time given to the archaeological sites.”

Alper, Switzerland Guided Green Tour · May 2026

Across the 350 most recent reviews, the guides and the Ihlara walk get the most praise; the complaints that come up most are the shopping stops and the length of the day, with a handful of reviewers saying they finished tired.

Cappadocia Green Tour FAQ

What travelers ask before booking the Green Tour.

What is the Green Tour in Cappadocia?

It's a full-day guided tour of southern Cappadocia. A typical route covers the Göreme Panorama or Pigeon Valley, Derinkuyu underground city, a 3–4 km walk through Ihlara Valley with lunch by the river at Belisırma, and Selime Monastery, with hotel pickup. "Green" is an informal label local agencies use for the southern route, so stops vary by operator.

What does the Cappadocia Green Tour include?

Hotel pickup and drop-off, a licensed guide and an air-conditioned minibus are included on every Green Tour we checked. Lunch and entrance tickets usually come only with a higher-priced option, and some small-group tours list lunch at about €10 on the day. Check which underground city the listing names and that it includes the Ihlara walk and Selime.

How long is the Green Tour?

About 9 to 11 hours door to door. Pickup is usually around 9:00–10:00 a.m., and you're back at your hotel between about 5:30 and 8:00 p.m.; reviewers of the Guided Green Tour on this page report getting back around 7:30–8:00. It's longer than the Red Tour because Ihlara Valley and Selime are about an hour and a half's drive from Göreme, so a good part of the day is spent in the minibus between stops.

How much does the Green Tour cost?

The best-reviewed group Green Tour costs about $38 per adult without lunch or tickets, about $70 with lunch and about $100 with lunch and tickets (checked September 18, 2026). Small-group Green Tours start at about $28–$29 per adult before fees, and tours that promise fewer shopping stops cost more. Bought separately, Derinkuyu is roughly €13 and Ihlara about €15, though fees change often.

Which underground city does the Green Tour visit?

Usually Derinkuyu, the deepest excavated underground city in Turkey at about 85 meters, with 8 levels open to visitors. Some tours visit Kaymaklı instead, which is wider and shallower and easier if you dislike tight spaces. The itinerary on the listing names the city; substitutions happen occasionally on busy days.

How long is the Ihlara Valley walk on the Green Tour?

About 3–4 km, taking an hour to an hour and a half, from the Tourist Gate to Belisırma village, where lunch is served by the river. The whole canyon is around 15 km, but tours walk only this stretch. The path is flat and easy; the effort is the staircase of roughly 400 steps down into the canyon at the start.

Is the Green Tour difficult?

It's the more demanding of Cappadocia's two main tours, mostly because of stairs: about 400 steps into Ihlara Valley and steep, low passages underground. The walking distance itself is modest. Most reasonably fit adults manage fine; serious knee problems or strong claustrophobia are the reasons to choose the Red Tour instead.

Is the Green Tour suitable if I'm claustrophobic?

Possibly not. Derinkuyu's tunnels are narrow, low and deep, and you'll stoop in places. Look for a Green Tour that uses Kaymaklı, which is wider and shallower, or book the Red Tour, which has no underground city. If you're unsure, ask the operator whether you can stay above ground during the underground visit before you book.

Is the Green Tour worth it?

Yes, especially without a car. Its sights are far from Göreme and from each other, so a tour saves more effort than on the Red Tour, and it adds experiences you won't find in the central valleys: an underground city, a canyon walk and a cliff monastery. With only one day, most first-time visitors should still pick the Red Tour.

Can I do the Green Tour on my own?

Only really with a car. Derinkuyu is about 35 minutes south of Göreme, and Ihlara and Selime about an hour and a half away in Aksaray province, and public transport doesn't link them in a way you can build a day around. With a rental car it's doable; buy tickets at each site or use the €65 Museum Pass, which covers Derinkuyu.

Can I do a hot air balloon ride and the Green Tour on the same day?

It's possible from spring to autumn: you're back from the balloon about two hours after sunrise and Green Tours pick up at 9:00–10:00. But it makes a very long day, with a pickup before 5 a.m. in summer and a return as late as 8:00 p.m. At least one Göreme operator advises against it; others sell it as a package. Our balloon and Green Tour page has the details.

Are there shopping stops on the Green Tour?

Most group Green Tours include at least one: usually an onyx or gemstone workshop, sometimes a spice and dried-fruit shop. You're under no obligation to buy. A few tours say they skip onyx and carpet shops, like the Nar Lake tour on this page. If you buy by card, pay in Turkish lira rather than your home currency.

Next Step

Book the Green Tour for a day without a balloon

It's a long, active day, so give it a morning of its own, not the one after a 4:30 a.m. balloon pickup. Choose the option with lunch and tickets for a no-extras day. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
