Summer generally gives you the best odds of flying. The exact figures are a guide, not a fixed rule: they are published month by month and shift from one year to the next. In the most recently published reports, June, July and August were each cleared on roughly 8 in 10 mornings, against roughly 3 in 10 for January and February. Even in June, July and August, some mornings are still grounded, so no month is ever a guarantee. September and October are cooler on the ground but have shown a real step down in cleared mornings compared with summer, closer to 6 or 7 in 10.

When deciding when to travel, go by how often a month is cleared to fly. On the day itself, that is out of your hands — what you can still choose is which morning flight to book. The slot centre's own study found wind conditions are most favourable during the first departure of the day, so book that one if you can. And book it for your first morning in Cappadocia, not your last: if the weather cancels it, you still have another morning to try again.

Every month, and how often it flew

The cleared-mornings column shows how often each month actually got airborne. It comes from the monthly reports the Cappadocia slot centre publishes, and it counts days on which the authority allowed commercial flights in the main Cappadocia flight area. These are the most recently published figures for each month, not a multi-year average, so treat them as a guide to the odds rather than a fixed rule: a windy month in one year is not a promise about the same month next year.

High summer: June, July and August

These are the three months that reliably fly. June was cleared on 25 mornings of 30, July on 24 of 31 and August on 26 of 31. July and August are also the driest months by a wide margin at Nevşehir: 2.3 and 1.7 days with rain, against 12 to 13 through the winter and spring. June is the outlier inside the group, with 8.1 rainy days and 37.5 mm, so if it is dry mornings you are counting on, July and August are the safer pair.

The trade-off shows up later in the day. Nevşehir averages a 28.5 °C daily maximum in July and 28.7 °C in August, and an average high does not rule out hotter days, so the walking and the underground cities are better done early or late. The flight itself is unaffected: it is over before the heat arrives.

July, if you would rather not share the valleys

Cappadocia's busiest months on the ground are not the summer ones. Admissions to the Göreme Open Air Museum peaked in May at about 152,000 and October at about 149,000 in 2025, while July took about 93,000, the lowest of any month between April and October. So July combines a high chance of flying with the fewest visitors of the warm season, and pays for it in afternoon heat.

Those admissions count entries to one ticketed site. They are a reasonable indicator of how busy the area is on the ground, not a count of balloon passengers, and they say nothing about how many balloons share your sky.

September and October: cooler, and a real step down in odds

September and October are the months people picture, and the drop in reliability is bigger than their reputation suggests. September was cleared on 20 mornings of 30 and October on 18 of 31, against August's 26 of 31. What you get for it is a far more comfortable day on the ground, at 24.5 °C and 18.3 °C, and October is also one of the two busiest months of the year at the museum.

April and May: fewer cleared mornings than the weather suggests

April and May look like obvious choices and behave like shoulder months. April was cleared on 18 mornings of 30 and May on only 17 of 31, worse than October. The slot centre's own analysis of the flight area puts the strongest winds of the year in March and April, which is the mechanism behind those numbers, and May still records 12.9 days with rain.

Winter: the lowest prices and the longest odds

January cleared 9 mornings of 31 and February 8 of 28, so fewer than three mornings in ten. Flights are sold and flown throughout: the slot centre recorded 841 commercial flights in January 2026 and 836 in February. Prices and hotel rates are at their lowest, sunrise is late enough that pickup is a civilised hour instead of the middle of the night, and snow on the fairy chimneys is possible. Snow is a bonus if it happens, though, not something a winter booking delivers, and a short winter trip built around a single morning is a bet you will usually lose.

What actually grounds a flight

Cappadocia balloon flights are not cancelled by the company you booked with. Before dawn, the slot service centre at the Cappadocia flight area assesses conditions and publishes a green, yellow or red flag for each sector. A red or yellow flag withholds departure clearance for that sector, so either the balloons in it fly or none of them do.

The limit that does most of the grounding is written into Turkish balloon regulations: a passenger flight may not go ahead when ground wind at the launch point is above 10 knots, which is about 18 km/h. The same rule applies to the forecast wind where the balloon is expected to land, which is why a still launch field is not on its own enough. Flights are also barred in thermal and cumulonimbus conditions, and poor visibility or a low cloud base will stop a morning.

In practical terms, 10 knots is about 18 km/h or 12 mph: a breeze you would notice on your face and enough to stream the flags at the launch field. The limit is deliberately strict, because a balloon has no engine and goes where the air goes: the only steering a pilot has is to choose an altitude where the wind blows the way they want.

That is why the seasonal pattern looks the way it does. Winter mornings are lost mostly to rain, snow and low cloud, and spring mornings mostly to wind: 13 of 31 March mornings were cleared, against 26 of 31 in August.

The practical consequence is the one thing to change about your booking: because the whole sector is grounded together, no amount of paying more, choosing a better operator or booking a smaller basket improves your chance of flying on a given morning. Only the month you come and the number of mornings you allow do that.

Which morning flight to book

Turkish rules open the morning flying period 30 minutes before sunrise and run it to 11:00, and they define an afternoon period from 14:00 to sunset as well. In practice the afternoon one is barely usable at Cappadocia: the slot centre's meteorological study of the flight area concludes that safe afternoon flying is not possible outside November, December, January and part of October. Every commercial flight you can realistically book leaves in the first part of the morning.

Within that window there is still a choice, and it makes a difference. The same study finds the first morning departure has the most suitable wind in every month of the year, with the second session running closer to the 10-knot limit. If an operator offers a later slot at a lower price, weaker wind conditions are usually why.

Sunrise moves a long way across the year at this latitude. It falls at about 05:15 in mid-June and about 07:55 in mid-January, so a pickup roughly an hour to an hour and a half beforehand lands between about 03:45 in midsummer and about 06:30 in deep winter. A winter flight is the one you can be awake for.

How many mornings to allow

The month sets your odds once. The number of mornings you are in Cappadocia sets how many times you get to use them, and it is the part of the decision you keep control of even when your flights are already booked.

Take October, cleared on 18 mornings of 31. Treating each morning as a fresh roll of the dice, three October mornings come to roughly nine chances in ten, against just over eight in ten for a single morning in August. That arithmetic is optimistic, because the weather systems that ground a flight usually last more than a day and consecutive mornings are not independent of one another. It is still the right direction: outside high summer, a third night does more for you than a better month does.

Two things follow. Book the flight for your first morning, not your last. If the weather cancels it, you still have another morning to try again. And check the cancellation terms before you book rather than after, because on this trip they are used often.

The 2025 annual figures — 223 cleared days, 29,479 commercial flights, 754,098 passengers and 27 licensed operators — come from the same centre's annual report, and the passenger total is corroborated by SHGM figures reported in February 2026.

The 10-knot ground-wind limit, the ban on flying in thermal and cumulonimbus conditions and the rule that passenger flights may run from 30 minutes before sunrise to sunset are all in SHGM's commercial ballooning instruction, SHT-BALON Rev.03, article 44. The morning and afternoon flying periods, the green, yellow and red flag system and the cap of 100 balloons aloft at once in the morning come from the Cappadocia slot instruction, SHT-BALON-SLOT Rev.02. The eleven monthly figures are the most recent published report for each month, and they come from two different years: August to November 2025, January to July 2026. They are single-year observations, not long-run averages, so a windy March in one year is not a statement about March in general. The annual 2025 figure of 223 days in 365 is the more stable number.
